HOW TO PLAY:
If you are like most of us, we have to look up the instructions for the different golf tournament formats for a refresher before playing them! This year for our fun nights we are giving you the format instructions here in addition to instructions on the night of play.
- Alternate Shot Format – May 26th – Pinecrest
- Chapman Format – June 23 – Sage Lakes
- 2-person Scramble Format – July 21 – Sand Creek
ALTERNATE SHOT:
Alternate Shot, also known as foursomes, is a two-player team format where teammates take turns hitting the same ball until it is holed.
How to Play
In the alternate shot format, two players form a team and play a single ball per hole.
- Tee Shots: One player tees off on the odd-numbered holes, while the other player tees off on the even-numbered holes.
- Tee Shot Assignment: Players decide before the round who tees off on odd and even holes; this does not change.
- After the tee shot, players alternate hitting the ball until it is holed. For example, if Player A tees off on hole 1, Player B hits the second shot, Player A hits the third, and so on. This sequence remains consistent throughout the round.
- One Ball Rule: Only one ball is used per team per hole.
- Penalties: If a penalty occurs, the stroke is added, but the alternating sequence continues as scheduled.
CHAPMAN:
The Chapman format is a two-player team game where both players hit drives, switch balls for the second shot, then select the best ball and play alternate shots to complete the hole.
How to Play
- Tee Shots: Both players hit their drives on every hole.
- Second Shots: Each player hits their partner’s ball for the second shot (Golfer A plays Golfer B’s ball and vice versa).
- After the second shots, the team chooses the ball in the better position to continue.
- Alternate Shots: From the selected ball, players then alternate until the hole is completed. The player whose ball was not chosen for the third shot plays first.
2-PERSON SCRAMBLE:
A two-person scramble is a team golf format where both players hit each shot, select the best ball, and play from that position until the hole is completed.
How to Play
- Tee Shots: Both players hit their tee shots.
- Select the Best Shot: The team evaluates both shots and chooses the one in the most favorable position, considering distance, angle to the green, and lie.
- Play from the Best Spot: The ball not chosen is picked up Both players then hit their next shot from the location of the selected ball, placing it within one club-length of the original spot, but not closer to the hole and maintaining the same type of lie.
Repeat the Process: After each shot, the team selects the best ball and continues until the ball is holed. On the green, the ball closest to the pin or in the easiest putting position is chosen, and both players putt from that spot until one sinks the putt.
